Unless you’ve been on a Facebook hiatus, you’ve likely seen the influx of quizzes on Facebook courtesy of Buzzfeed. From which city do you belong to to which 90’s sitcom character are you most like, the social quiz is back on the scene wasting hours of time for the social maven.
The trend started after the initial, and seemingly harmless, quiz showing the user what city do they belong to. After the success of this quiz, Buzzfeed also started doing quizzes for advertisers such as Mattel with it’s ‘What type of Barbie are you?’ This quiz alone was viewed more than 1 million times with over 161,000 shares according to Buzzfeed.
The thing is, the Facebook quiz isn’t a new phenomena. Remember when the social network just started picking up speed and there were loads of time wasters online like ranking your Top 5 and testing your IQ? These seemed to fall out of style for a while, but unlike that No Fear tattoo, these quizzes are hot again and smart brands are jumping aboard with their own quizzes.
Get a Bright Idea
The first thing you need is an idea. Brainstorm with your team to come up with something that you think your clients would share with their friends. Think about humor, stroking their ego or touching on an emotive issue.
Get an App
Using Facebook applications, a small business can easily create a quiz and post it to their Facebook page in minutes. A Facebook application is similar to an app on your phone. It’s just a standalone feature that you connect to your page and then display in that row of square icons on your page. Some of these apps are even free, although the best one’s are typically paid for, ranging from $20/month to $2500+.
Make sure to use a like gate so that users have to like your page in order to take the quiz. This will help you increase your network size and connect new users to you for future updates.
Create the Questions
Don’t have too many questions as you’ll end up wearing out your audience. Keep it to around 5-10 questions max without any brain busters. They should be able to take the quiz and see the results in about a minute.
Test it With Your Friends
Get your friends and/or colleagues to take the quiz first. It’s the safest way to flush out any issues, typo’s or annoyances with your quiz. Test with multiple people, multiple times.
Post & Shout
Once your quiz goes live, the hard work begins. You need to shout about it! Post regular updates over the lifespan of the quiz, share it with your friends and clients, get your stylists to take the quiz and share with their friends, include it in your newsletter, offer a prize, etc. You get the idea.
