The other day I had lunch with a well-respected salon owner turned consultant and aside from discussing the many obstacles facing the modern salon owner, we were chatting about how social media is changing the marketing game.  I know, very surprising that the lunch conversation turned social, right?  With the rapid pace at which this new group of media is changing in itself, it’s no wonder many owners simply can’t bear to dive in.  But what many of those would-be ostriches don’t know is that managing a social media page can be as simple as sending an email.

Facebook provides a unique email address for it’s users to send updates to their wall, or profile.  This is super handy when you are on the road and have one of those moments that you wish you had a computer (or even a pen and paper) to share your idea, thought or question before it escapes you.  You can find this email address by going to http://www.facebook.com/mobile/ while logged into your profile or by going to Edit Page under your fan page and then selecting ‘mobile.’

There is also a way to send an email update to Twitter, which makes this arraignment even better since you can send the same update to both networks at the same time!  However, you can only do this by using an application called Twittermail that you set up in advance.  The nice thing about this application, though, is it also allows you to use short-hand to do clever things with the updates, like delay the update by adding a ‘+2hours’ to the subject line.

While there are also applications developed for smart phones that provide you access to your profile and fan pages for updating without a computer, this method is good for those that are anti-technology, need something that can send to many profiles at once or just simply don’t want to mess around with a bunch of apps and love the simplicity of email!
