You’ve made the switch from the old Facebook pages to the new Facebook Timeline Page and hopefully that didn’t mean simply slapping a cover image on your page in a panic! Now you’re refining your design and your understanding of the power of Timeline for pages and we are here to help you start with some tips on customizing those cute little application icons on your page.

To first give you some background, what used to be called ‘tabs’ and listed below your profile pic on the old version is now listed on the bottom right of your timeline and called ‘applications’. Very similar to how you add applications to your smartphone, you add applications to your Facebook page to make it more functional and engaging.

Along with customizing the names of these applications like you did with the old tabs, they have square thumbnails available to design and customize to promote these areas of your timeline. Here’s how you can take advantage of these options and increase the traffic to these custom areas of your Facebook Timeline.

#1 – Add some applications!

In order to customize your applications, you first need to add some custom applications. You cannot customize the standard Facebook applications, like Photos, so you’ll need to add your own. If you want some cool applications like an email newsletter signup, or a group deal application, contact your linkup coach to get you hooked up!

#2 – Organize your applications

Facebook Timeline ApplicationsYou can move your applications around in the order they appear with the exception of the Photos app, which will always remain first. It’s a good idea to re-organize these applications regularly depending on the fluctuation of your marketing priorities. Select the upside down triangle on the right hand side of the row of applications, which expands the total list of applications on your page. Next, hover over the application you want to move, click on the pencil icon to edit the application and then select the application you want to swap positions with in the list.

#3 – Design your applications

Next you need to design your icons, which are 111 Pixels X 74 Pixels in size. Translated – they are tiny, so don’t think you’re going to fit a lot of text in there. Keep verbiage to a minimum and experiment with images, icons and colors to get something that grabs attention and stands out.

#4 – Upload your designs

To upload your application pics, select the edit option on the app that you want to change. Select ‘Edit Settings’ in the drop down list and you’ll see a pop-up box with the current settings of your application. Select ‘Change’ next to the Custom Tab Image option in the pop-up screen. This will open a new window in your browser with the options to upload a new image. Select ‘Change’ in this new window and browse to find your image where it is saved on your computer.
