YelpYelp! can be a great place to find new businesses and review those that you love (or hate). As a salon owner, you likely feel fairly exposed with this review service and the risk of clients (and non-clients alike) having cart blanche online with your reputation. Whether you get loads of new clients, or are recovering from unfortunate circumstances, Yelp! has millions of reviews and continues to grow.

Salons aren’t the only businesses being affected, and it would seem that it’s not even restricted to brick-and-mortar businesses. Check out these weird Yelp! business listings we found around the network.

  • Jails – there are quite a few reviews of jails in different locations! Some of the reviews are tongue-in-cheek, but some are legitimate. Here’s a review for the Orange County Jail in Orlando, FL.
  • Dating sites – Think Yelp is just for brick-and-mortar locations? Think again. The popular matchmaking site eHarmony has a Yelp review page with some disgruntled daters.
  • Google – The official Yelp page is for Google Headquarters, but nearly 60 people have weighed in on Google products like free email (“You get what you pay for”) and Google Wallet.
  • The Puppet Bike – in Chicago, the Puppet Bike is a traveling puppet show that can often be found in The Loop, an area of Chicago frequented by tourists. The Puppet Bike has 111 reviews!
  • Mars (the planet) – Yelp reviewers give Mars four and a half out of five stars, though one reviewer says it lacks “breathable atmosphere.” It’s official Yelp classification is a Bed and Breakfast.
  • Hospitals – have a choice of hospitals to go to when you get sick? Check out Yelp before you go to make sure that you choose the best one! Yelp reviewers talk about the nursing staff, doctors, food, and more at different hospitals.

Yelp can be a great site for your salon and encouraging open, honest feedback at all times and showing integrity in face of mediocre to negative reviews matters more than a 5 star reputation.
