Viral Video Building Blocks

By December 13, 2012September 23rd, 2013No Comments

Many local business owners feel like the viral video is a bit of a unicorn- a legend attainable to those in the right place at the right time or with big budgets. However, getting some viral awareness with your videos may be closer than you think when you incorporate some key building blocks that have proven a consistent theme in YouTube’s most popular videos.

The best viral videos use more than one of the building blocks in their strategy. When brainstorming angles that your salon or spa can take, try to weave as many of these concepts into your video as possible to increase your chances of capturing attention.

10 Building Blocks & Example Videos:

#1 – Music

The identification of music and the emotional value is priceless when creating any type of video. This example also incorporates humor.

#2 – Surprise/Shock/Awe

People love drama, so these sorts of videos that leave viewers shaking their head give your videos shareability.

#3 – Cute

This video is undoubtedly cute, which often also incorporates humor at the same time.

#4 – Sexy

This video is banned for users under 18, so perhaps an extreme example, but this had a lot of people talking. Incorporated celebrity, music and sex into one viral bomb!

#5 – Humor

This is an example of a trend in viral videos – taking an existing video and using a program called ‘auto-tune’ to put their own lyrics over it, adding in humor. Music, humor and current events.

#6 – Celebrity

This campaign started as a single viral video, which ended up with endless additions due to the popularity. Incorporated celebrity, sex and humor to create a great brand awareness campaign.

#7 – Meaningful/Emotion

This video did a great job of tying in a few different building blocks – emotion, music and awe.

#8 – Current Events

This video took a current event (not so current now) and took an interesting angle, making it funny and also relevant to pop culture.

#9 – Building Influence

This video demonstrates that you don’t have to have great content to go viral. Turns out this was a hoax, but still proves the point that consistency pays off.

#10 – Keep it Short

The best viral videos are short (under a minute). Your promotional and educational videos can stretch that time limit, but keep your viral messages short and sweet.
